If you’re reading this, you’ve probably also told yourself this would be the month you don’t buy more Pokémon cards. Same here. And yet, here we are, staring down another lineup of Elite Trainer Boxes and tins, knowing full well they're life choices we'll likely regret but will definitely make again.

The Scarlet & Violet sets keep rolling out stunning releases, both in terms of visuals and competitive play. Unfortunately for our wallets, some of these boxes are genuinely worth opening.

0Contains 2 x Surging Spark Boosters $29.99 at Amazon
This tin is surprisingly solid. It includes five booster packs from a diverse selection of sets — Surging Sparks, Stellar Crown, Temporal Forces, and Obsidian Flames — along with one promo card featuring either Kyogre, Dialga, or Xerneas. It’s essentially Pokémon's take on a loot box, and yes, I ended up buying two. With the potential to pull chase cards like Pikachu ex, Terapagos, or Raging Bolt from the included sets, the odds of landing something exciting are pretty good. Even though I'm not usually a fan of tins, I'd definitely consider grabbing another one.

0Contains 1 x Surging Sparks Booster $19.99 at Amazon
I didn't expect much from this, but I bought it for the sticker sheets and the promise of a Surging Sparks pack. And it delivered. You get three packs, one of which could potentially yield a card like Pikachu ex or Latias ex, plus a tin that I'm now using to store... well, nothing. But I can't even be upset about it. There's a small chance you might pull a Milotic ex or Ceruledge ex if luck is on your side, and if not? You've spent twenty bucks to roll the dice and gained some mildly useful storage in return. That's more than I can say for most of the cereal I've bought this year.

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet and Violet: Paradox Rift: Elite Trainer Box - Roaring Moon
0$56.77 at Amazon
I initially picked this up for the sleeves, but stayed because Roaring Moon ex is the epitome of a Pokémon that doesn't play by the rules. If your strategy involves ending games swiftly and stylishly, this is your card. Paradox Rift might not boast as many chase cards, but the ones it does have—like Iron Valiant ex and Groudon—seem crafted by someone who knows we'll still be admiring them decades from now.

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet and Violet: Temporal Forces: Elite Trainer Box: Walking Wake
0$53.64 at Amazon
The Walking Wake Elite Trainer Box comes with a full-art Flutter Mane and nine more Temporal Forces packs to take another shot at the best art of the Scarlet & Violet era. This box leans into the ancient theme, and I picked it up to boost my chances of pulling Walking Wake ex. Is it competitively viable? That's debatable. But its design looks like it stepped out of a dream inspired by too much sushi. The vibrant blues and prehistoric drama alone make it worth the price. Plus, the sleeves are sleek, and I like to pretend I care about those.

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet and Violet: Temporal Forces: Elite Trainer Box: Iron Leaves
0$55.24 at Amazon
Iron Leaves ex strikes the perfect balance of being both competitively viable and beautifully illustrated. It appears as if it's leaping straight out of a sci-fi anime, which is exactly the kind of energy I want from my pulls. The other key cards — like Iron Crown ex and Gouging Fire ex — either pack a punch or look ready to do so. But Raging Bolt ex steals the spotlight with its dramatic and loud design, perfectly blending "meta staple" with "thunder god cosplayer."

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet and Violet Shrouded Fable Elite Trainer Box
Pokémon TCG: Scarlet and Violet Shrouded Fable Elite Trainer Box
0$57.98 at Amazon
Shrouded Fable subtly introduces cards like Houndoom, whose illustration demands a hushed reverence, and Persian, which looks like it's plotting something suitably cinematic. The promos and sleeves are nice, but I was really after this box for the Illustration Rares that not only look fantastic but also tell a story. For instance, Fezandipiti ex is the versatile support attacker you need, while Cassiopeia brings character drama in a foil rectangle. The art direction in this set is almost pretentious, and I mean that in the best possible way.
