Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!
The highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has arrived, and the modding community is exploding! Within 24 hours of its September 5th release, over one million mods were installed, according to Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke. This number has since skyrocketed, surpassing three million installs, as reported by mod.io founder Scott Reismanis.
Vincke himself highlighted the significant impact of modding on the game, stating that "Modding is pretty big." This surge in mod usage is largely attributed to Patch 7's inclusion of Larian's official Mod Manager, a built-in tool simplifying mod browsing, installation, and management.
Patch 7 also introduced a wealth of new content, including evil endings, enhanced split-screen, and numerous bug fixes and performance improvements. The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower modders to create custom stories using Larian's Osiris scripting language. These tools allow for custom script loading and basic debugging, with direct publishing capabilities.
A significant development, highlighted by PC Gamer, is a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" which expands the capabilities of Larian's editor, including a full level editor and re-enabled features previously restricted. While Larian initially limited access to its development tools, the community's ingenuity is pushing boundaries.
Looking ahead, Larian plans to support cross-platform modding, a complex undertaking involving both PC and console versions. Vincke confirmed that PC support will come first, followed by console support after thorough testing and addressing potential issues.
Baldur's Gate 3's future looks bright, with more updates and further expansion of modding capabilities on the horizon. The game's robust modding community is clearly a significant factor in its continued success.
