Black Beacon: A Hands-On Look at the Global Beta of This Gacha Action-RPG
News just broke: the global beta for the gacha action-RPG, Black Beacon, launched a few days ago. Unsure if it's worth the download? We played the beta over the weekend to see if Black Beacon has what it takes to be the next mobile gacha sensation.
Setting and Story
The game unfolds within the colossal Library of Babel, a setting drawing inspiration from Jorge Luis Borges' short story and the biblical Tower of Babel. This unique blend of judeo-christian mythology and the vast, potentially infinite library creates a compelling and intriguing backdrop.
You play as The Seer, a character thrust into this strange world with a significant destiny: becoming the new custodian of the Library of Babel. Your arrival triggers significant changes, including a monstrous emergence from the depths and time-travel related events involving a clockwork star. The story is rich with lore and mystery.
Gameplay
Black Beacon offers 3D free-roaming exploration with adjustable camera perspectives (top-down or free camera). Real-time combat is hack-and-slash based, emphasizing combo chaining and strategic character switching mid-battle. This tag-team system allows benched characters to regenerate stamina, encouraging dynamic team management. Combat requires timing and awareness of enemy attacks, preventing mindless button-mashing. The diverse cast of characters, each with unique fighting styles, adds depth and replayability.
The Beta Experience
The global beta is available on Google Play (Android) and TestFlight (iOS, limited slots). The beta allows players to experience the first five chapters. Pre-registration is also available, offering rewards such as Development Material Boxes (website) or an exclusive Zero costume (Google Play).
While it's too early to definitively declare Black Beacon a future gacha giant, our initial experience is promising. The unique setting, engaging combat, and intriguing characters make it a title worth exploring.
