Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE Evangelion crossover fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. Let's examine what went wrong with the August 2024 collaboration.
The Issues
The collaboration featured Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato in designs intended to be faithful to their original appearances. However, this faithfulness wasn't enough to entice players. The initial Shift Up designs were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators, leading to alterations that, while acceptable to the licensors, lacked appeal for the NIKKE player base.
Player Feedback
The problem extended beyond the character designs. Players felt little incentive to purchase limited-time characters or costumes, particularly given the lack of significant visual differences between the new skins and the base models. Asuka's gacha skin, the most expensive option, was cited as being too similar to her original design.
The core appeal of Goddess of Victory: NIKKE lies in its distinctive style and engaging narrative. Recent collaborations, however, have been perceived as diluting this identity, diminishing player enthusiasm. While the game boasts a strong foundation, the uninspired Evangelion event, coupled with its drawn-out nature, left players feeling unsatisfied.
Looking Ahead
Shift Up acknowledges the feedback and promises improvements in future collaborations. It remains to be seen if these promises will translate into more engaging crossover events. In the meantime, both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are available on the Google Play Store. Hopefully, we'll see Shift Up deliver more compelling content in the months to come.
