Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP: A Remaster's Resurgence
Released late last year, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has reportedly surpassed 200,000 units sold, demonstrating significant player interest in this action-packed classic. Despite initial technical hiccups and some controversy, the game's sales figures clearly indicate strong demand.
Developed originally by Grasshopper Manufacture (known for the No More Heroes series), Lollipop Chainsaw is a thrilling hack-and-slash title where players take on the role of a chainsaw-wielding cheerleader battling hordes of zombies. While the original developers didn't helm the remaster, Dragami Games stepped up, incorporating quality-of-life improvements and a substantial visual upgrade.
This sales milestone, exceeding 200,000 copies across current and last-generation consoles, as well as PC, was announced by Dragami Games via a recent tweet. The achievement comes several months after the remaster's September 2024 launch.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP's Triumphant Sales Figures
The game casts players as Juliet Starling, a San Romero High cheerleader who discovers her zombie-hunting heritage when her school is overrun by the undead. Juliet uses her trusty chainsaw to engage in intense hack-and-slash combat against waves of zombies and formidable bosses, offering gameplay reminiscent of titles like Bayonetta.
The original 2012 release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 achieved even greater success, reportedly selling over a million copies. The game's popularity can be partly attributed to the unique collaboration between renowned game designer Goichi Suda and James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, who contributed to the game's compelling narrative.
While there's currently no news regarding potential sequel development or additional content based on RePOP's success, the strong sales are encouraging for remasters of less mainstream games. This positive trend is further exemplified by the recent release of Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, another Grasshopper Manufacture title updated for modern platforms.
