PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, No Home Run
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of play, it's a promising offering.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience is evident in 2K25's polished gameplay. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive roster of real-world courses (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and Open Championship), the core gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, are easily overlooked.
The improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving and challenging gameplay, catering to casual and hardcore players alike. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee shots based on course obstacles adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics further enhance the realism. Playing as Tiger Woods, this year's cover athlete, provided an enjoyable starting point.
MyCareer mode incorporates engaging narrative elements. I was even offered a movie role alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Gameplay choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that further affects performance. The addition of weekly Quests, like achieving 10 consecutive birdies, provides ongoing goals.
The MyPlayer creator allows for detailed character customization, and the inclusion of skill trees adds another layer of progression. While multiplayer wasn't tested, the promise of ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies sounds appealing, evoking memories of classic online golf experiences. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This might dampen initial excitement, but it promises a solid, enjoyable golf experience for fans and those seeking a relaxing game. A playable demo is currently available.
