Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sets Up Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel fans face a longer wait than expected to see Earth's Mightiest Heroes reunite on the big screen, following Disney's recent announcement to delay Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Avengers: Doomsday is now slated for release seven months later, arriving on December 18, 2026. Its successor, Secret Wars, will follow a year after that on December 17, 2027. Amid these changes, discussion has also turned to the future of Spider-Man.

Tom Holland's Peter Parker is scheduled to make his return next year in the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for July 31, 2026. The film will continue Peter's story after the events of No Way Home, where his identity was mysteriously erased from global memory.

Before the schedule shift, Spider-Man: Brand New Day was set to release after Avengers: Doomsday, positioning the Tom Holland-led film as an MCU interlude between the two major Avengers chapters. There had been speculation that Disney and Sony were developing another storyline involving the multiverse antics characteristic of the current MCU era.

Now, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day—which has yet to begin filming—releasing before either Avengers film, fans are hopeful this allows the next Spider-Man story some creative freedom, potentially focusing on a more grounded, street-level narrative within the Marvel universe.

Consider the original plan: Avengers: Doomsday would likely have ended on a major cliffhanger, much like Avengers: Infinity War, compelling audiences to return for the resolution in the next installment. As a key Avenger, Spider-Man would almost certainly be involved—and if not, his absence would require explanation. In that context, Brand New Day would have had to either follow those events, take place before them, or simply ignore the escalating stakes elsewhere.

"This completely changes the dynamic for Spider-Man 4," one fan commented on Reddit regarding the delay and the film's new placement. "At least in terms of how we assumed it had to fit chronologically between both Avengers films. Now it seems that won't be the case."

"If Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn't delayed as well, it likely means it won't be a multiverse battle world movie," another fan suggested, alluding to the iconic location where Marvel heroes are stranded during the original Secret Wars comic storyline.

Generally, Spider-Man enthusiasts are eager to see more of the character in his own stories, swinging through the streets of New York rather than being whisked away on cosmic Avengers adventures. For many, Disney's delay is welcome news.

"This is the best update we've had about Spider-Man 4," one supporter wrote.

"With Brand New Day releasing before Doomsday, it opens the door for a grounded story, which aligns with recent rumors and casting news," added another, referencing online chatter about villains being cast for a classic, New York-based narrative.

Earlier this month, Liza Colón-Zayas, known for her role as Tina Marrero in FX’s The Bear, was reportedly cast in Brand New Day. Fans speculate she may be playing the mother of Miles Morales—the popular alternate Spider-Man strongly expected to debut in live-action following his success in Sony's Spider-Verse animated films.

As part of its updated release calendar, Disney also removed an untitled Marvel project originally scheduled for February 13, 2026. Many believe this was a placeholder for the long-awaited Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali, which now appears likely to skip this phase of the MCU entirely, if it happens at all.

Other Marvel film dates—previously set for November 6, 2026 and November 5, 2027—have also been revised and are now listed as "Untitled Disney" releases. If these are not connected to the Marvel universe, the MCU's theatrical output will be relatively light over the next few years.

The remainder of 2025 will see The Fantastic Four: First Steps hit theaters in July, while the Disney+ series Ironheart and Wonder Man are also set to debut.

Next year's Disney+ lineup is expected to include the second season of Daredevil: Born Again (anticipated in spring), a one-off Punisher special, and Vision Quest, the Paul Bettany-led series that has reportedly begun filming.
