Warner Bros. Eyes Michael Bay for Cavill's Man of Steel Sequel

Before the DC Universe's overhaul and James Gunn's Superman reboot, Warner Bros. reportedly sought Transformers director Michael Bay to helm a Man of Steel sequel starring Henry Cavill.

TheWrap revealed that executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy actively pursued a standalone Henry Cavill-led Superman movie in 2022, with discussions about Michael Bay potentially directing. These efforts occurred before James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed as the new DC Studios co-heads in October of that same year.

Ultimately, those plans never materialized, paving the way for Gunn and Safran's DCU reimagining. This new direction led to Cavill's departure from the Superman franchise in December 2022—just two months after the new leadership took charge.

Since then, Superman has taken a completely new direction from the Cavill era. David Corenswet—known for his roles in Ti West's Pearl and Ryan Murphy's Netflix series Hollywood—will inherit the iconic role in James Gunn's franchise reboot. He'll be joined by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult completes the central trio as Lex Luthor. Despite these exciting developments, one can't help but imagine what Bay and Cavill might have achieved with another cinematic flight.

Both talents remain highly active in their careers. Cavill has multiple upcoming projects, including live-action adaptations of Voltron and Highlander. Meanwhile, Bay recently released a parkour documentary titled We Are Storror. Although rumors suggested he might direct the controversial Skibidi Toilet movie, the director took to social media last month to deny involvement with that particular project.

James Gunn's Superman arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025.
