Digitizing the Heritage of Devarattam
This application is part of my initiative, "Digital Revolution of Devarattam," honoring the art form and its masters.
It is dedicated to the esteemed legends of Devarattam: Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman, a retired teacher; Kalaimani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar; and Kalaimani Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, who were honored with the KALAIMAMANI, KALAIMANI, and USTAD BISMILLAH KHAN YUVA PURASKAR awards, respectively. I also dedicate this app to my Guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and the other cherished legends of Devarattam. The primary goal of this Devarattam app is to promote awareness of Devarattam and recognize its awardees. The app provides detailed descriptions of Devarattam and its honored artists. Devarattam is a traditional folk dance from Tamil Nadu. Historically and in the present day, it has been performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community. The dance consists of 32 to 72 steps, with 32 being the foundational movements, while the others are variations built upon these basics.
Devarattam dancers hold a kerchief in each hand, wear Salangai (ankle bells) on each leg, and perform to the rhythm of a traditional instrument known as the Deva Thunthumi.
