Avowed features five distinct Backgrounds, each offering unique dialogue options and a starting weapon. While Backgrounds influence narrative tone, all characters can access any equipment or abilities. The available Backgrounds are Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. Here’s how they shape your story:

Arcane Scholar: This Background casts you as a learned academic with dialogue options reflecting scholarly insight. A graduate of Bragganhyl Academy, your treatise on soul lineages provoked a local lord, leading to your arrest. The emperor recruited you for the imperial court archives, leveraging your expertise in the occult, law, history, and poetry. Court Augur: Marked by a tragic past, this Background paints you as a mystic shunned as a witch after failed crops and eerie visions sparked village suspicion. Fleeing to Highcrown, you became the emperor’s personal seer. Court Augurs excel in spiritual dialogue, ideal for players embracing a wizard role and connecting with companion Giatta.
