Avowed's Director Eyes Future Development
Expansions and Sequels on the Horizon?
Microsoft and Obsidian are reportedly pleased with Avowed's sales figures. In a February 22, 2025 Bloomberg interview, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the possibility of future expansions or a sequel. While Obsidian hasn't publicly announced any concrete plans, Patel expressed a strong desire to continue working within the established world, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Navigating Avowed's Development Challenges
Avowed's development journey was complex and involved significant changes. Patel described the process as "messy," highlighting the challenges of managing a large team and adapting to shifting circumstances. The project, initiated in 2018, underwent a leadership change and a game reboot in January 2021. This led to the removal of certain features, including a planned multiplayer component. Under Patel's leadership, the team refocused on strengthening the narrative and lore, drawing inspiration from the Pillars of Eternity franchise and shifting from an open world to a series of interconnected open zones.
Pillars of Eternity Tactics in the Works?
With Avowed's success reviving interest in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is exploring the possibility of a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer confirmed the studio's interest. While the scope and scale remain to be determined, Sawyer also reiterated his commitment to developing Pillars of Eternity 3, aiming for a budget comparable to Baldur's Gate 3.
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
