The critically acclaimed series Shōgun, which swept up 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is set to return for a highly anticipated second season. According to an official press release from FX, Cosmo Jarvis, who portrays the character of pilot John Blackthorn, will not only reprise his role but also take on the position of co-executive producer for Season 2.
Furthermore, lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who committed to the second season back in May after the show's renewal from its initial limited series format, has been elevated to the role of executive producer, having previously produced the first season. Production for the new season is scheduled to commence in January 2026 in Vancouver, the same location where the original series was filmed.
FX has revealed that the upcoming season will introduce "a wholly original new chapter" distinct from the first season, which was an adaptation of James Clavell’s novel. The network elaborated on the narrative connection between the two seasons:"In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.
"Part two of Shōgun is set 10 years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.”
Fans eagerly awaiting the next installment can look forward to potentially seeing new episodes by the end of 2026, though for now, all we can do is wait and hope for the best.
