Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame system based on the original game's Expedition League. This guide covers Expedition mechanics, rewards, and the associated passive skill tree. Four major endgame events – Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions – await in the Atlas map. Expedition map nodes are marked with a distinctive light blue spiral icon.

Launching and Completing an Expedition

To guarantee an Expedition encounter, use an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot on the Atlas. Once in a map with an Expedition, locate the marked area and interact with one of four NPCs.

The core mechanic involves strategically placing Explosives near Markers to summon Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests.

• Runic Monsters: Spawn from Explosives near Red Markers. Larger markers yield larger monster packs, enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
• Unearthed Remnants: Relics providing beneficial or detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased elemental damage but higher item rarity from chests).
• Excavated Chests: Appear when Explosives are detonated near Black Markers with the spiral symbol. These chests contain Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, Waystones, and high-end gear.

Use the Explosives UI to visualize their area of effect (AoE). Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal farming. After placing Explosives, activate the Detonator. If overwhelmed, you can retreat and return later; the event doesn't end upon leaving the area.

The Expedition Pinnacle Map and Olroth

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. Use these with Dannig in your hideout to access the Expedition Pinnacle Map – a significantly larger Expedition with more Explosives.

This map features a challenging boss, Olroth (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth grants 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, valuable currency, and a chance at unique items. The higher the map level, the greater the chance of Olroth appearing.

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Accessible through the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances the Expedition experience. It's located in the top-right of the Atlas Skill Tree menu, distinguished by its spiraling blue design.

The tree offers Notable nodes and nodes increasing Logbook difficulty. Defeating Olroth is crucial for acquiring points to unlock these nodes.

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for increased difficulty and even better rewards. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to its significant reduction in Explosives.

Expedition Rewards

The main rewards are Artifacts, used to trade with specific vendors for gear.

Each Expedition features one vendor. Artifacts aren't consumed after map completion. Exotic Coinage refreshes any vendor's inventory. Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock the Pinnacle Map and the chance to fight Olroth for exceptional rewards.
