Wizards of the Coast is gearing up for a thrilling summer with the much-anticipated crossover between Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy. Over the weekend, they unveiled a substantial portion of cards from both the main set and the specialized Commander decks, sparking excitement among fans who are thrilled to see familiar elements from their beloved Final Fantasy games brought to life in Magic.
The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy is set to offer both a traditional Commander experience and a booster-driven series, resulting in a vast array of cards to explore. The main set spans the entire mainline of Final Fantasy, covering games from Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 16. During the Magic: The Gathering panel at PAX East, several cards were showcased that beautifully capture the journeys of iconic characters. For instance, Final Fantasy IV's Cecil features a unique mechanic that reflects his transformation from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. The summons from Final Fantasy are represented through a "Saga Creature" setup, blending the essence of both Magic and Final Fantasy into powerful, yet temporary, forces on the battlefield.
Notable cards like Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, with artwork by Square's Tetsuya Nomura, depict Sephiroth's evolution across the FF7 universe, culminating in his Safer Sephiroth form on the card Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

The set also includes a Cid from each of the numbered Final Fantasy games, with a nod to the older Cid from Final Fantasy XV rather than his daughter, Cindy.

Following the panel, Wizards of the Coast released the decklists for the four Commander decks, which have been met with enthusiasm as fans delve into the art and thematic adaptations of Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14 into Magic.
Reprints and new versions of existing Magic cards cleverly integrate Final Fantasy lore. For example, Skullclamp features art inspired by the Jenova project from Final Fantasy 7, while Together, Forever evokes the emotional depth of Final Fantasy 10's narrative. Be aware, though, that some cards may contain story spoilers for the respective games.

Wizards also managed to inject humor and lighter moments from Final Fantasy into the cards. Clever Concealment references the Wall Market scene from Final Fantasy 7, while Secret Rendezvous showcases four different versions of the Golden Saucer date scene, each with a different potential date: Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

Fans have been quick to spot the intricate details that pay homage to the source material. The Final Fantasy 14 set, in particular, is rich with references to the MMORPG, such as the Hildibrand Manderville card and the Archaeomancer's Map, which uses a location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map.
Final Fantasy 14 players have been enjoying the cards, with humorous nods like the "This is Thancred" meme and alternative flavor text on the Rite of Replication card, celebrating a memorable speech from A Realm Reborn.
Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...

The attention to detail in these cards is impressive and has certainly piqued my interest in the full set. While the Commander decks have received much attention, other reveals like Commune With Beavers have me eager to see how the rest of the Final Fantasy games are adapted into the broader Magic set.
The Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set is scheduled for release on June 13, 2025, with a pre-release weekend one week prior.
