Fortnite Updates Master Chief Armor

Fortnite initially stated that the Matte Black style for The Master Chief skin would no longer be obtainable, but the company has now backtracked and made it available again. While players were excited for the skin's return, the removal of this particular style sparked a strong negative reaction from the community.

December is an event-packed month for Fortnite players. With in-game celebrations like Winterfest underway, the game introduces numerous new NPCs, quests, items, and more. Although this year's event has been well-received overall, the comeback of certain skins has faced some backlash. In light of this, Epic Games has provided an update regarding The Master Chief skin.

In a new social media post, Fortnite shared positive news for those hoping to acquire The Master Chief skin. The skin first arrived in Fortnite in 2020 and quickly became a fan favorite. After its last appearance in the Item Shop in 2022, its slated return for 2024 generated considerable excitement. However, on December 23, Epic announced that the Matte Black style would be discontinued—a departure from the original unlock terms. Originally, players who purchased the skin could unlock this variant at any time simply by playing on Xbox Series X/S. The company has now reversed course once more, confirming that players can still earn the Matte Black style as originally promised.

The Master Chief Skin's Return to Fortnite Sparked Controversy

Players were unhappy with the initial announcement, with many suggesting it could potentially attract scrutiny from the FTC. This concern arose shortly after the FTC facilitated $72 million in refunds to Fortnite players over Epic's use of so-called "dark patterns." The community was especially displeased that the change impacted both new buyers and existing owners; even players who purchased the skin in 2020 would have lost the ability to unlock the style.

This isn't the only skin to cause debate recently. For example, Epic Games recently brought the Renegade Raider skin back to the game. While some welcomed its return, veteran players threatened to quit in protest. Currently, some fans are also calling for an exclusive "OG" style for those who obtained The Master Chief skin when it first launched. Though Epic has resolved the Matte Black style issue, the introduction of an OG-specific variant seems highly unlikely.
