The long-awaited GTA 6 mapping project has shifted into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, sparking a frenzy of activity among its dedicated community. Garza, a key figure overseeing the project's Discord server, shared with IGN that the new trailer "really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The server, now boasting 370 members and on the verge of hitting 400, is abuzz with excitement as volunteers dive deep into the wealth of new information provided by Trailer 2.
"It’s an information overload," Garza remarked, emphasizing the monumental task ahead. "We have so much new content to work on and we’re really just getting started." The project, which began in the wake of the massive September 2022 leaks, aims to create the most accurate GTA 6 map possible. Prior to Trailer 2, their efforts were primarily based on those leaks and the initial trailer released in December 2023.
The latest map iteration, version v0.049, released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, is now outdated. The influx of details from Trailer 2 promises to significantly enhance the accuracy and detail of the map. Rockstar's latest reveal not only confirmed plot details and introduced new characters but also released 70 new screenshots and detailed information about various explorable locations within the state of Leonida, GTA 6's fictionalized Florida.
Key locations unveiled include Vice City, mirroring Miami, the tropical Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and the national landmark Mount Kalaga near the state's northern border. The volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of these areas and match them to real-world counterparts, aiming to refine the map further.
Once completed, DuPz0r plans to release an updated map, offering fans a comprehensive preview of what to expect from GTA 6 upon its anticipated release in May 2026. The community remains vigilant, ready to incorporate any new assets or gameplay footage Rockstar might release in the interim. Only upon the game's launch will they be able to assess the accuracy of their painstaking work.

However, the project faces potential legal challenges from Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two. A modder who created a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 was forced to halt their project after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two in March. When asked about these concerns last year, Garza expressed "some mild concern" but noted that the project has operated without direct interference so far.
"We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular," Garza explained. He believes that the project's role in generating interest and excitement for GTA 6 might be why Take-Two has not intervened yet. Nonetheless, he remains prepared to comply with any potential cease and desist order.
As the mapping project continues, fans can stay updated with all the latest developments and theories surrounding GTA 6, including detailed analyses of Trailer 2 and emerging fan theories.
