Harrison Ford, the iconic actor known for his role as Indiana Jones, has expressed his approval of Troy Baker's portrayal of the beloved character in the video game "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle." In a discussion with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Ford humorously remarked, "You don’t need artificial intelligence to steal my soul. You can already do it for nickels and dimes with good ideas and talent." He praised Baker, known for his role in "The Last of Us," for delivering a brilliant performance without the need for AI.
"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle," released in December, has been described as an "authentic" addition to the long-standing series, though it may not be considered canonical. This game's release came on the heels of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" in 2023, the first new film in the series in some time. While the film did not receive favorable reviews, the game has been well-received, suggesting that the franchise's creators might consider exploring this new direction rather than having Ford reprise his role.
Ford, who has also starred in the "Star Wars" franchise and is set to appear in Marvel films, joins a growing list of creatives who have voiced concerns about the use of AI in media. Tim Burton has described AI-generated art as "very disturbing," and Nicolas Cage has called it a "dead end." Voice actors, including Ned Luke of "Grand Theft Auto 5" and Doug Cockle of "The Witcher," have also criticized AI, particularly its potential to undermine their livelihoods. Luke called out a chatbot that used his voice, while Cockle warned IGN that AI is "inevitable" but "dangerous," echoing Luke's sentiment that such technology could rob voice actors of income.
