NetEase's Marvel Rivals mistakenly bans innocent players
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued an apology for mistakenly banning a significant number of innocent players while attempting to eliminate cheaters. The error primarily affected players using compatibility layer software on non-Windows systems, including macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck.
A mass ban targeting suspected cheaters inadvertently flagged these players as cheaters due to the compatibility layers they used. The issue, acknowledged by community manager James on the official Discord server, has since been resolved with the affected players' bans lifted. NetEase apologized for the inconvenience and urged players to report actual cheating behavior while providing avenues for appeal against wrongful bans.
This isn't the first instance of Proton, the SteamOS compatibility layer, triggering anti-cheat systems, highlighting a persistent challenge in cross-platform gaming.
Calls for universal character bans
Separately, a significant player demand within Marvel Rivals revolves around the implementation of universal character bans. Currently, this feature is only available in Diamond rank and above. Players, particularly those in lower ranks, express frustration on the game's subreddit, arguing that the lack of character bans in all ranks creates an uneven playing field and limits strategic gameplay.
Reddit users highlight the advantages higher-ranked players have with character bans, emphasizing that extending this mechanic to all ranks would improve the overall gameplay experience, fostering strategic diversity and fairer matches. NetEase hasn't yet publicly responded to these concerns.
