When MultiVersus launched in 2022, it enjoyed explosive success, reaching a peak of 153,000 players on Steam. However, the player base soon plummeted by 99%, prompting Warner Bros. Games to shut down the project in June 2023, labeling it as an "open beta test." Despite a return in May 2024 with updates, the game struggled to recapture its initial popularity.

The fifth season, set to begin in early February, could be the developers' final opportunity to reignite player interest. Essentially, this is a relaunch for MultiVersus, though the developers have chosen to refer to the 2022 release as a "beta."
