Netflix has decided to close the chapter on its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the end of a brief yet intriguing venture into narrative gaming. This decision might come as a surprise to many, given the solid player base that these games had cultivated. So, what led to the cancellation of Netflix Stories? Let's dive into the details!
The news, initially confirmed by Variety, is part of a larger strategic pivot at Netflix Games. The focus is now shifting towards developing mobile titles that cater to party games, children's games, mainstream releases, and other interactive experiences designed for TV play.
Despite this shift, Boss Fight Entertainment, the creative force behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue their collaboration with Netflix on other projects, including the highly anticipated Squid Game: Unleashed.
Netflix Stories Gets Cancelled, So Is It Shutting Down?
Even with some criticism, the Netflix Stories games consistently ranked among the top-played titles on the Netflix platform. Recent data shows it secured the fourth spot in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, which is based on playtime rather than downloads.
As for the future of the series, Love Is Blind: NYC will be the last interactive title under the Netflix Stories banner. Once it's fully rolled out, no new games will be developed in this category. This announcement follows shortly after the Netflix Stories app started teasing its upcoming game, The Love Contract, which was scheduled for release on April 8th.
The Love Contract was set to be a unique addition to the lineup, as it was not based on any existing Netflix IP. It promised an original romance narrative centered around an actress navigating the complexities of fame, scandal, and a faux romance with a Hollywood star and a billionaire. Unfortunately, this project has now been cancelled.
Despite the cancellation, fans can still enjoy the existing Netflix Stories games. Titles like Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple will remain available for play. However, planned sequels such as those for Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have been axed.
That's the full story on the cancellation of Netflix Stories! If you're a fan of Netflix shows, you can still check out the remaining games on the Google Play Store.
