Nexus Mods, a leading PC gaming mod platform, transitions to new ownership as founder Robin “Dark0ne” Scott steps down after 24 years to focus on his mental well-being.

The head of one of the largest gaming communities shared news of its next chapter in a message released today. Scott has officially relinquished his role at Nexus Mods following months of discussions, in-person meetings, and deep reflection.

The announcement omits many behind-the-scenes details but confirms that two individuals, Victor (known as Foledinho) and Marinus (known as Rapsak), have taken on leadership roles, now holding the “Site Owner” title. This shift marks a new chapter for Nexus Mods and a well-deserved break for Scott.

“The burden of managing the massive platform I built has weighed heavily on me,” Scott shared. “The role’s stress has caused ongoing anxiety and health challenges. I’ve been burning out, and this has affected my team and Nexus Mods as a whole. Stepping aside and bringing in fresh leadership is the best way to ensure the platform thrives and remains the modding community we all cherish.”

From a small project started in Scott’s bedroom for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Nexus Mods has grown into a cornerstone of PC gaming. According to its About Us page, the platform boasts 63.4 million users and 16.8 billion file downloads, making it one of the UK’s most visited websites.

As Nexus Mods expanded, so did its toll on Scott, who has been “on call” daily for over two decades. His departure from daily operations will bring changes, but he reassured the community that there’s no cause for alarm.

“I’ve been gradually stepping back for years,” Scott explained. “The team has shouldered more responsibility, and the site is performing better than ever. This change formalizes that shift, ensuring the right leaders guide Nexus Mods into its next phase.”

Scott emphasized that his departure, alongside minor structural adjustments, aims to secure “long-term stability” without altering the site’s recent operations. He affirmed, “Nexus Mods remains community-driven and mod-author focused—that’s non-negotiable.”

While stepping back from leadership, Scott plans to stay connected with the Nexus Mods community through its Mod Author Discord, forums, and other channels. He will also support the 40-person team during this transition, easing his role as the platform’s public face.

“This isn’t a corporate exit or a secretive deal,” Scott clarified. “It’s about prioritizing my well-being, reclaiming mental space, and letting go of the need to control everything myself.”

Nexus Mods has hosted countless fan-made mods for games like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Stardew Valley, Baldur’s Gate, Cyberpunk 2077, and many others for decades. Following the surprise release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion earlier this year, the platform saw dozens of new mods uploaded almost instantly. As the go-to hub for PC gamers to customize their games, this leadership change—the first in 24 years—brings some uncertainty about its future.
