Nintendo Switch 2 Size Revealed

Author: Charlotte Apr 12,2025

The very first moments of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveal a significant size increase over its predecessor. As the old Joy-Con controllers detach from the original Switch, the tablet section visibly expands and transforms into the new, larger model. This growth indicates Nintendo's shift away from the compact handhelds of the past, aligning more closely with the larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad that dominate the current market.

Although Nintendo hasn't released official size dimensions for the Switch 2, we can estimate its size based on the trailer and a recent hands-on experience with a mock-up at CES 2025. The consumer electronics convention showcased a Switch 2 prototype by peripheral designer Genki, which closely matches the design shown in Nintendo’s trailer. This suggests that our measurements from the CES mock-up are likely very close to the final product's dimensions.

So, how much bigger is the Switch 2? Let's explore our rough estimates.

The Genki mock-up vs Nintendo's official Switch 2 design.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement represents the diagonal of the display, excluding the bezels, adhering to the universal standard for screen sizes. This matches a rumor from early 2024, leading us to expect the display to be about **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.

If these estimates hold true, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly **30% larger diagonally** and **66% larger in overall area** compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD display. This is a substantial upgrade, and provided the display technology is up to par, the Switch 2 could offer a visually stunning gaming experience.

Comparing the Switch 2's screen to other handhelds, it's **45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area** than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, the Switch 2 would be **14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area**.

In the context of portable PCs like the Steam Deck, which has a 7-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen would be **8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area** than the Steam Deck OLED's 7.4-inch display.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

Given the significantly larger screen, the entire Switch 2 console is also larger. The original Switch already required sizable pockets, and the Switch 2 will likely fit only in cargo pants or a bag.

At CES, our measurements of the Genki mock-up showed a length of just over **10.5 inches (265mm) from edge to edge, including the Joy-Cons**, and a height of **4.5 inches (115mm)**. These measurements align closely with the trailer, suggesting that the **Switch 2 is approximately 25% larger than its predecessor**, which measures **239mm long and 102mm tall**.

These dimensions would make the Switch 2 about **61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm)** and **12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm)**. While we couldn't measure the depth precisely, it appears to be comparable to the original Switch's half-inch thickness.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The transformation animation in the Switch 2 reveal trailer indicates that the Joy-Con controllers will maintain a similar width to the original Switch but will be slightly taller. Using our method of scaling images, we estimate that the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons will be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall** – the same width as the original, but **13mm taller**, resulting in the new Joy-Con being approximately **13% larger** than before.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

By subtracting the estimated size of the Joy-Cons from the overall console dimensions, we calculate that the **Switch 2 screen unit is approximately 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is about **31% larger than the original Switch's screen unit**.

This size accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 screen, with estimated bezels of approximately **11mm on the sides and 8mm on the top and bottom**. The side bezels are thinner than those on the original Switch, while the top and bottom bezels are similar.

Please note that these measurements are our best estimates and may differ from the official dimensions when released by Nintendo. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we believe these estimates are close to what we can expect from the final product. We look forward to getting hands-on with the console later this year to confirm these details.
