Development of The Outer Worlds 2 is reportedly advancing smoothly, with Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart providing updates on both this highly anticipated action RPG sequel and their fantasy RPG Avowed.
Steady Progress on The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed Says Obsidian Entertainment CEO
Obsidian Entertainment Confident About Upcoming New Titles
The Outer Worlds 2, the follow-up to the acclaimed space action RPG, is making strong progress according to Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart. While the studio remains primarily focused on their fantasy RPG Avowed, Urquhart reassured fans that the sci-fi sequel is developing positively.
During a recent interview with Limit Break Network, Urquhart expressed confidence in the development team: "I'm impressed with the team working on The Outer Worlds 2. Many key members who worked on the original are still involved, and their experience shows in the project's quality."
The CEO acknowledged the studio's challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic and their acquisition by Microsoft. Simultaneous work on multiple projects like Grounded and Pentiment stretched resources thin. "We struggled with productivity for about a year and a half," Urquhart admitted. At one point, they even considered pausing The Outer Worlds 2 to concentrate on Avowed.
"After our 2018 acquisition, we were adjusting to new circumstances when COVID hit," Urquhart explained. "We were finishing The Outer Worlds, developing its DLC, advancing Avowed, starting Outer Worlds 2, while also working on Grounded and Pentiment."
Looking back, Urquhart noted how Grounded and Pentiment exceeded expectations, while Avowed looks promising and The Outer Worlds 2 appears particularly impressive. Though no specific gameplay details were shared, with Avowed now scheduled for 2025, fans anticipate similar scheduling adjustments for other projects.
First announced in 2021, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen few updates since its reveal. Urquhart acknowledged potential delays similar to Avowed's postponement but reaffirmed Obsidian's commitment to quality: "We're determined to deliver excellent games, even if timelines need adjustment. The end results will prove worth the wait." Both titles are planned for PC and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
