PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse control, especially for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games that demand precision. However, some PC games are surprisingly better suited to controllers. Reflex-based action and fast-paced melee combat often lend themselves well to gamepad control, mirroring how certain genres, particularly those originating on consoles, translate better to that input method.
While many PC releases offer keyboard and mouse support, certain titles truly shine with a controller. The recent release slate (as of January 7, 2025) includes several examples where the controller experience may be preferable, though many recent titles, such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force, are arguably better with keyboard and mouse. Even Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered, while playable with either, might offer a slightly smoother experience with a gamepad.
Several upcoming releases show promise for superior controller play:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita port echoing the Monster Hunter formula, suggesting natural controller compatibility.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently benefits from gamepad controls, and this remaster is expected to follow suit.
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Given the similar combat system to its predecessor, a controller is likely the preferred input method.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: A PS5 port to PC usually implies controller prioritization, although keyboard and mouse may still be viable.
A notable 2024 Soulslike title has also been added to this list (see below).
