Supermassive Games Implements Workforce Restructuring
Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, has announced another round of layoffs affecting up to 36 employees. This follows a previous reduction of 90 staff earlier this year, totaling approximately a third of the studio's workforce since 2023.
Project Directive 8020 Pushed to 2026
In a company statement, Supermassive confirmed its sci-fi horror title Directive 8020 will now launch in early 2026, citing the need to "deliver the very best experience" for players. The project was first teased in 2022 as part of The Dark Pictures Anthology.
"We remain focused on our upcoming projects," the studio stated. "This additional development time allows us to refine the gameplay experience while maintaining our commitment to quality."
Dark Pictures Anthology Development Timeline
The horror anthology series launched with Man of Medan (2019), followed by Little Hope (2020), House of Ashes (2021), and The Devil in Me (2022). Directive 8020 now represents the longest gap between franchise installments.
Current Project Status
Supermassive confirmed these changes won't affect Little Nightmares 3, still scheduled for October 10 release. The studio emphasized its continued work across multiple projects despite organizational adjustments.
"We're deeply grateful for our community's patience and support during this transition period."
