Sony's Spider-Man Universe isn't finished yet! Reports indicate the studio is developing a new film featuring the live-action debut of a highly popular character.
While Marvel dominates the Spider-Man franchise, Sony's ambitions remain strong. Recent rumors suggest a new Spider-Man movie is in development, excitingly introducing a beloved character to the live-action world.
As Marvel prepares for a fourth Spider-Man film, Sony's project takes a different path. Industry insider Jeff Sneider, on The Hot Mic podcast, revealed Sony is casting Miles Morales for their next Spider-Man movie. Whether this leads to a standalone Miles Morales film or an appearance in another project remains unclear, but the news is promising.
Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore in Sony's successful animated Spider-Man films, quickly became a fan favorite. A live-action adaptation feels inevitable, especially considering producer Amy Pascal's previous confirmation of Sony's interest. While a standalone film is possible, inclusion in another Sony Spider-Man Universe movie seems more likely—perhaps a secretly-developed film or the rumored Spider-Gwen movie. Sneider didn't name potential actors, but fan speculation points to Moore (who's expressed interest) and Hailee Steinfeld (who voiced Gwen in the animated films and also expressed interest).
Sony's Spider-Man films have been successful, but the rest of their Spider-Man Universe hasn't fared as well; Madame Web and Morbius underperformed at the box office. A live-action Spider-Verse film, particularly one centered on Miles, could revitalize the franchise, provided the right team is assembled. Sony's animated success demonstrates their capabilities, but concerns remain about their live-action adaptations. Many believe Marvel might be a better fit, and fans hope Sony chooses the right creative talent to do Miles Morales justice. The future remains uncertain, but the wait to see Sony's approach and whether they can overcome past setbacks to meet high expectations is on.
