Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online boast robust autosave features that effortlessly record a player's progress during gameplay. However, pinpointing the exact moment of the last autosave can be tricky, which is why many players opt for manual saves and forced autosaves to safeguard their progress. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the steps to save your game in both Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online, ensuring you never lose a moment of your thrilling adventures.
You'll know an autosave is in progress when you see an orange circle rotating clockwise in the bottom-right corner of your screen. Though it's easy to overlook, spotting this circle confirms your progress has been safely saved.
GTA 5: How to Save
Sleep at a Safehouse
To manually save in GTA 5's Story Mode, simply head to a Safehouse and hit the hay. Safehouses, which serve as the primary and secondary homes for the game's protagonists, are easily identifiable by the white house icon on your in-game map.
Once inside, make your way to the bed and use the following controls to sleep and access the Save Game menu:
- Keyboard: Press E
- Controller: Press Right on the D-Pad
Use the Cell Phone
For a quick save without the trip to a Safehouse, use your in-game cell phone. Follow these simple steps:
- Open the cell phone by pressing the up arrow key on a keyboard or up on the controller's D-Pad.
- Select the cloud icon to open the Save Game menu.
- Confirm the save.
GTA Online: How to Save
GTA Online lacks a manual Save Game menu like its Story Mode counterpart, but you can still trigger autosaves to protect your progress. Here are some effective strategies to ensure your achievements are saved:
Change Outfits/Accessories
Forcing an autosave in GTA Online can be as simple as changing your outfit or an accessory. Follow these steps and keep an eye out for the spinning orange circle in the bottom-right corner, indicating a successful save. If it doesn't appear, just try again.
- Open the Interaction Menu by pressing M on a keyboard or the touchpad on a controller.
- Select Appearance.
- Choose Accessories and swap an item, or opt to change your entire Outfit.
- Exit the Interaction Menu.
Swap Character Menu
Another way to trigger an autosave is by visiting the Swap Character menu, even if you don't end up switching characters. Here's how to do it:
- Open the Pause Menu by pressing Esc on a keyboard or Start on a controller.
- Navigate to the Online tab.
- Select Swap Character.
