Writer Reveals Unique Approach to Silent Hill f's Narrative
Higurashi and When They Cry creator Ryukishi07 has finally shared insights into his work on Silent Hill f, comparing the game's supernatural and psychological horror elements to "salad dressing."
While anticipation for Silent Hill f—the franchise's first mainline entry since 2012—has been building, Ryukishi07's recent appearance at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles marked his first extended commentary on the project. During a panel with producer Motoi Okamoto and composer Akira Yamaoka, the writer explained that he approached Silent Hill f differently from his usual novels, focusing the story around a single central theme.
Supernatural and Psychological Horror Will Blend, Then Separate
Speaking to Famitsu (via Automaton), Ryukishi07 revealed that early in the game, players may struggle to distinguish between supernatural events and psychological horror—much like a freshly shaken salad dressing. However, as the story progresses, these elements will gradually separate and become clearer, similar to how oil and vinegar eventually divide.
For fans puzzled by the metaphor, Ryukishi07 clarified that while players will uncover facts about the eerie town of Ebisugaoka, much of the horror will remain open to interpretation—something Silent Hill fans thrive on.
More Than Just Horror—A Story of Humanity
Unlike fan expectations of pure nightmare fuel, Silent Hill f will also explore deeply human emotions, including love and sorrow, following franchise tradition. Notably, Konami has confirmed on X/Twitter that Silent Hill f is not a sequel but a standalone title, allowing newcomers to dive in without prior series knowledge.
Beauty and Terror Collide in 1960s Japan
Producer Motoi Okamoto teased that Silent Hill f will feature brutal combat, haunting music, and grotesquely beautiful monster designs, along with puzzles steeped in psychological torment. The game follows Hinako Shimizu, a teenager crushed under societal pressures, in 1960s Japan—marking the first Silent Hill title to receive an 18+ rating in Japan.
Silent Hill f launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 25.
