Sony is set to reboot the iconic Starship Troopers franchise with a new film adaptation, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and Variety. Neill Blomkamp, acclaimed director of films like District 9, Elysium, and Chappie, has been tapped to both write and direct this fresh take on Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 military sci-fi novel.
This new project, brought to us by Sony's Columbia Pictures, will not be a continuation or related to Paul Verhoeven's 1997 cult classic sci-fi satire of the same name. Instead, Blomkamp's version aims to be a direct adaptation of Heinlein's original work, promising a different approach to the story.
With both the new Starship Troopers and Helldivers movies in development, Sony finds itself in a unique position. The Hollywood Reporter clarifies that Blomkamp's film will not be a remake of Verhoeven's movie but will instead return to the source material. Heinlein's novel, which differs significantly in tone from Verhoeven's satirical take, has been interpreted by some as promoting the very ideals the film mocks.
As of now, neither the new Starship Troopers nor the Helldivers movie has a confirmed release date. Fans will have to wait patiently to see how these projects unfold. Blomkamp's most recent directorial effort was Sony's Gran Turismo, which adapted the popular PlayStation driving simulation series into a feature film.
