The previous generation, the Sony XM4, was already an outstanding headphone, but the XM5 introduces key enhancements in noise cancellation and comfort. The XM5 is equipped with a second processor and twice the number of microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The earcups have been redesigned for a snugger fit on the ear, creating a better seal and thus improving passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation is notably superior to that of the XM4 and stands out among other noise-canceling headsets in its price range.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 also features a sleeker redesign with an updated headband adjustment style.
