Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link!

Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, their anticipated mobile game. While the news may come as a shock to some, those familiar with Square Enix's history of project cancellations might not be entirely surprised. The development team had been hard at work on Missing-Link since 2019, conducting multiple closed beta tests on both Android and iOS platforms. In November 2024, the team shared a delay announcement on X, leaving participants of the closed beta tests somewhat surprised, given the advanced stage of development.

Why Was Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link Cancelled?

The development team cited an inability to chart a satisfactory long-term path for the game as the primary reason for its cancellation. Missing-Link was intended to be a live-service game, but the execution did not meet expectations. The game was designed as a unique, GPS-based spinoff where players could explore the world and battle Heartless with their keyblades, set within an untold chapter of the Kingdom Hearts saga. Despite the global popularity of the franchise, the innovative concept did not translate well into practice. Square Enix decided to halt the project rather than release a substandard product, choosing instead to redirect their efforts.

But Kingdom Hearts IV Is Still Coming!

On a brighter note, Square Enix has reaffirmed their commitment to Kingdom Hearts IV. Announced during the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event in 2022, the game continues to progress in development. Fans disappointed by the cancellation of Missing-Link can find solace in the fact that the main series remains a priority.
