She returns home for one more shift. The psychological thriller The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, has delivered strong box office results — prompting Lionsgate to officially greenlight a sequel.

Titled The Housemaid’s Secret, the upcoming film adapts the second installment of Freida McFadden’s bestselling trilogy. According to studio press materials, development has been underway for several months, with production slated to begin later this year. Rebecca Sonnenshine returns as screenwriter for the adaptation.

Sweeney and co-star Michele Morrone will reprise their roles, while director Paul Feig takes the helm again. Sweeney also steps into an executive producer role alongside McFadden.

Based on the first novel in McFadden’s series, The Housemaid earned $133 million since its December 19 release, cementing its status as a commercial hit for Lionsgate. With over 12 million copies sold across the entire book series, there is clearly strong audience demand.

“Both global box office performance and enthusiastic social media reactions show that audiences have responded powerfully — and loudly — to The Housemaid’s unique, theatrical experience,” said Adam Fogelson, Chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “We’re eager to reveal what happens next.”

“We’ve believed in these stories from day one, and we’re thrilled to bring Millie’s next chapter to life alongside our talented creative team: Todd, Paul, Laura, Carly, Alex, and Sydney,” he continued. “Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid’s Secret is another gripping entry that has captivated readers worldwide, and we can’t wait to translate it into an equally thrilling cinematic experience.”

Paul Feig also weighed in on adapting the second book: “It’s been exciting to watch audiences around the globe fall in love with The Housemaid and our talented cast and crew. We’re fortunate that Freida McFadden has already expanded Millie’s journey, allowing us to partner with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to life.”

While no official release date has been announced yet, a late-next-year premiere seems most likely.
