Twisted Metal Season 3 has reportedly been greenlit at Peacock, though the series will return without its original showrunner.
An update on the future of PlayStation’s Twisted Metal TV adaptation comes from Variety, reporting that more episodes for the Anthony Mackie-led series are in development. However, a creative shakeup means co-creator and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith will not be returning to the helm.
The reason behind Smith’s departure from this video-game-to-live-action project remains unclear. David Reed, recognized for his writing work on The Boys, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and The Magicians, is set to step in as showrunner and executive producer under an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television for Season 3.
The renewal of Twisted Metal for a third season follows the July premiere of Season 2, as the series continues to attract viewers. According to NBCUniversal, the 12-episode run has accumulated 993 million minutes viewed to date.
Twisted Metal began introducing iconic PlayStation characters to television when its first season aired in 2023. Mackie stars as John Doe, alongside Anthony Carrigan as Calypso, Thomas Haden Church as Agent Stone, and Richard de Klerk as Mr. Grimm. The series also features franchise mascot Sweet Tooth, portrayed by Joe Seanoa and voiced by Will Arnett.
Although the Twisted Metal video game franchise has not seen a proper release in 13 years, Peacock is still bringing its cartoonish vehicular combat to streaming audiences. Co-creators Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick return as executive producers for Season 3, joined by Arnett and Marc Forman via Electric Ave. Mackie will serve as an executive producer through Make It Gravy Productions, with Jason Spire from Inspire Entertainment, Peter Principato from Artists First, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions, and Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hermen Hulst also attached to the project.
Details regarding how Season 3 of Twisted Metal will continue its narrative remain under wraps, along with release dates and casting information.
