While Magic: The Gathering's recent high-profile crossovers with franchises like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man have been grabbing headlines, the next set in the lineup, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, is poised to make its own mark. This eagerly anticipated expansion brings us back to the beloved plane of Tarkir, and we're thrilled to offer an exclusive first look at five cards that are set to dominate the draft tables next month. These five cards form a cycle, each sharing common design elements across Magic's color spectrum. They are all inexpensive, common-rarity creatures that come with an ability linked to one of Tarkir's three-color clans, plus an additional ability allowing you to convert mana into a color from that clan.
"Three-color limited environments require robust mana fixing across all rarities," explains Adam Prosak, Senior Game Designer at Wizards of the Coast. "We wanted to ensure many decks could access mana fixing, so we designed these creatures to help solve mana issues while simultaneously allowing players to develop their board presence. Unlike tapped lands, which only generate mana, these creatures keep you from falling behind while you fix your mana."

Lauren Bond, Senior Worldbuilding Designer, highlights that while the mechanical design of this cycle was the initial focus, common cards often serve as a canvas to paint the world of the set. "This cycle reflects the evolution of Tarkir's clans since we last saw them. From the action-oriented Jeskai monks to the Temur's use of whispers, the protective and avenging Naga of the Sultai, the diverse military prowess of the Mardu, and the Abzan clerics working to regrow lost kin trees, these cards bring the world to life."
Some recent Magic sets have faced criticism for relying too heavily on tropes and thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting established planes. However, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out with its straightforward approach to revisiting Tarkir. Forrest Schehl, Senior Worldbuilding Art Director, emphasizes the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast. "The top-level pitch for Tarkir was set long before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and the subsequent sets. Our goal was to merge Dragons and Clans in a novel way for Tarkir, with Dragonstorms playing a crucial role. Lauren and I felt the pressure to authentically build the next chapter of this beloved plane from day one."
Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available for preorder now, with the set slated for release in both paper and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will kick off on April 4.
