Valve Unleashes Team Fortress 2 Code: Modders Celebrate

Valve has just unveiled an expansive update to the Source SDK, introducing the complete client and server game code of Team Fortress 2. This significant development empowers players to create entirely new games from the ground up, offering modders unprecedented access to modify, expand, and even completely transform Team Fortress 2 in innovative ways.

While creations made using this update cannot be sold and must be shared for free on a non-commercial basis, Valve has opened the doors for these mods to be published on the Steam Store. This means that your new games can appear directly in the Steam game list, reaching a vast audience of potential players.

Valve emphasizes the importance of the TF2 community's contributions, particularly through the Steam Workshop. "Players have a lot of investment in their TF2 inventories, and Steam Workshop contributors have created a lot of that content," Valve noted in a recent blog post. They encourage modders to honor this community effort by not creating mods that aim to profit off the hard work of Workshop contributors. Additionally, Valve hopes that many mods will continue to integrate players' existing TF2 inventories, enhancing the modding experience.

Alongside this major SDK update, Valve is rolling out comprehensive enhancements to its entire multiplayer back-catalog of Source engine games. These improvements include 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and numerous other optimizations. Titles such as Team Fortress 2, Day of Defeat: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Counter-Strike: Source, and Half-Life: Deathmatch Source will all benefit from these updates, promising a smoother and more enjoyable gaming experience.

In other news, after a seven-year wait, the seventh and final installment of The Team Fortress 2 comic series was released in December.
