In a March 5, 2025 interview with Variety, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann hinted at the possibility of The Last of Us Part II being the final installment in the game series. When questioned about The Last of Us Part III, Druckmann responded, "I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it." This statement casts doubt on the future of the TLOU video game franchise, as Naughty Dog shifts focus towards its TV series.

Druckmann previously elaborated on his approach to sequels during a DICE Summit 2025 interview with IGN. He stated that he avoids focusing on sequels while developing the initial game, preferring to treat each project as potentially standalone. This approach suggests that any future TLOU ideas would need to be compelling enough to warrant a new game, rather than being pre-planned sequels.

The cancellation of The Last of Us Online paved the way for Intergalactic. In a February 19, 2025 interview with the Sacred Symbols+ podcast, former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida revealed that the decision was made after consultation with Bungie. Bungie emphasized the significant long-term commitment required for successful live-service games, a commitment Naughty Dog felt would compromise the development of Intergalactic. Yoshida highlighted a lack of foresight on Naughty Dog's part regarding the scope of a live-service game.

Druckmann's comments, combined with the cancellation of TLOU Online, strongly indicate that Naughty Dog is currently focusing its efforts elsewhere.
