Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making waves in the gaming world with its upcoming VR release, exclusively launching on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's debut in virtual and mixed reality gaming.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Statements

The February 8th, 2025 Civ World Summit Event brought the exciting news of Civ VII VR's Meta Quest exclusivity. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for launching "a new era of strategy excellence." Meta's Chris Pruett highlighted the timing, calling it "an awesome time for mixed reality," and emphasizing Civ VII VR as a "genuine Civ experience" tailored for dedicated strategy gamers. Note that, despite the game's release on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR immerses players in a "Command Table" environment, offering unique perspectives on their empires. Players can seamlessly switch between virtual and mixed reality modes, experiencing the game from a personalized museum vista (VR) or integrating the Command Table into their physical space (MR).

The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer for up to four players using Meta Quest 3/3S headsets. Players can team up against AI or compete head-to-head, all while seeing each other as their chosen world leaders within the VR/MR environment. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games is actively responding to player feedback gathered during Civ VII's early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe/Founder's Edition owners). The team is prioritizing UI improvements, focusing on intuitiveness, map readability, and overall polish. Future updates will also address community requests, including team-based multiplayer, diverse map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is slated for March, concentrating on UI refinements, AI balancing, diplomacy adjustments, and bug fixes.

Release Information

Civilization VII VR is expected to launch sometime in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. The standard Civ VII is currently available in early access and will receive a full release on February 11th, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
