Destiny 2 Update Causes Players' Usernames to be Wiped Out

A recent Destiny 2 update inadvertently resulted in a significant number of players experiencing unexpected Bungie Name changes. This article details the developers' response and outlines steps for affected players.

Destiny 2 Players' Names Mysteriously Altered After Update

Bungie to Issue Name Change Tokens

Following a recent game update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their account names (Bungie Names) had been unexpectedly altered. Numerous players reported their names replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This issue, starting around August 14th, stemmed from a malfunction in Bungie's name moderation system.

Bungie acknowledged the problem via Twitter (X), stating: "We're tracking an issue where many account names were changed by our Bungie name moderation tool. We're investigating and will provide an update tomorrow, including details on an additional name change token for all players."

Bungie's system typically alters names violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this incident affected players with perfectly acceptable names, some using the same name since 2015.

Following an investigation, Bungie confirmed the problem and implemented a server-side fix to prevent further occurrences. They tweeted: "We've identified the root cause of the widespread Bungie name changes and deployed a server-side fix. This prevents further issues. We'll distribute name change tokens to all players later; more details to come."

Bungie urges patience while they resolve this issue. Affected players can anticipate receiving name change tokens and further communication shortly.
