Each 100-card deck boasts a mix of reprints with new Final Fantasy art and brand-new cards designed specifically for Commander. The decks aren't just character-themed; they delve deep into the lore of each respective game, capturing iconic moments and storylines.
Deck Selection and Design:
The choice of Final Fantasy games was a careful balance of gameplay appeal and story recognition. While Final Fantasy VII and XIV were easy choices, Final Fantasy VI and X required more deliberation, ultimately chosen due to their popularity within the development team.
The Final Fantasy VII deck cleverly blends the original game's narrative with the aesthetic enhancements of the Remake trilogy, offering a nostalgic yet visually updated experience. Final Fantasy VI, known for its pixel art, required a unique approach. Wizards of the Coast collaborated directly with the Final Fantasy VI team to update the character designs for Magic, drawing inspiration from Yoshitaka Amano's concept art, original sprites, and the Pixel Remaster.
Commander choices were also strategic. While Cloud was a natural fit for VII, other choices involved careful consideration. Terra (VI), Tidus (X), and Y'shtola (XIV, specifically her Shadowbringers arc) were selected to lead their respective decks, offering diverse gameplay styles and thematic depth.
Gameplay and Color Identities:
All four decks incorporate White, a deliberate choice for thematic consistency and versatility. Each deck's color identity and gameplay mechanics are inspired by the corresponding Final Fantasy game:
- Final Fantasy VI: Focuses on rebuilding your party from the graveyard, reflecting the game's later stages.
- Final Fantasy VII: Employs equipment strategies (White-Red), enhanced with Green to incorporate "power matters" cards and references to the Planet and Lifestream.
- Final Fantasy X: Uses the Sphere Grid leveling system as a core mechanic (White-Blue-Green).
- Final Fantasy XIV: Leans into non-creature spellcasting (White-Blue-Black), incorporating key characters.
Beyond the Commanders, fans can expect to see many beloved Final Fantasy characters and villains featured throughout the decks as legendary creatures and in spell art.
Availability and Collector's Editions:
The Final Fantasy set launches June 13th. Each of the four Commander decks will be available in both regular ($69.99 MSRP) and Collector's Edition ($149.99 MSRP) versions, with the latter featuring Surge foil treatment on all 100 cards. And while these four games are highlighted in the preconstructed decks, Wizards of the Coast assures fans that all sixteen mainline Final Fantasy games will be represented across the entire product line.
