Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios has taken an unexpected turn with their latest announcement. On April 24, via a post on Twitter (now known as X), they unveiled Frostpunk 1886, a complete remake of the original game, now powered by the Unreal Engine.

The announcement highlighted that Frostpunk 1886 will introduce a brand-new Purpose Path, eagerly awaited mod support, and a host of other features, all while preserving the essence of the original game. In a detailed Steam post on the same day, the developers shared their vision for this ambitious project.

11 bit Studios is transitioning from their proprietary Liquid Engine, which was used for the first game, to the Unreal Engine. The success of Frostpunk 2, developed on Unreal Engine 5, inspired them to revisit and enhance the original Frostpunk. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," they explained.
