Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X

Rumors suggest a new port of the classic 1997 first-person shooter, Doom 64, is on the horizon for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. This follows an updated ESRB rating listing the game for these platforms.

The 2020 release of Doom 64 for PS4 and Xbox One, featuring enhanced visuals and a new chapter, was well-received. Now, it appears Bethesda is bringing this enhanced version to current-gen consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the updated ESRB rating strongly suggests an imminent release. Historically, ESRB ratings often precede announcements by just a few months.

The lack of a PC listing in the ESRB update is notable, although the 2020 version included a Steam release. Furthermore, modding communities have already enabled Doom 64 experiences on PC using classic Doom titles. Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles adds further credence to the possibility of a stealth launch for Doom 64.

Looking ahead, 2025 promises another exciting entry in the Doom franchise: Doom: The Dark Ages. A potential January announcement is anticipated, with a release likely sometime next year. Re-releasing classic titles like Doom 64 serves as excellent pre-release promotion for the upcoming installment.
