Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatibility Limited to GameCube Classics

Exciting news for Nintendo fans: the beloved Nintendo GameCube is making a comeback via the Nintendo Switch Online service, coinciding with the much-anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside this, a classic GameCube controller is set to be released, although some fine print suggests it might be exclusively for GameCube games on the new console.

In the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer, a statement clearly states: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies that the new GameCube controller may be limited to use with GameCube titles available on the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, and not other games on the Switch 2. However, it's worth noting that other Nintendo controllers with similar disclaimers have occasionally worked beyond their stated limitations, suggesting there could be workarounds for enthusiasts.

Interestingly, this disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America version of the trailer, adding a layer of intrigue. Given the GameCube controller's ample button layout, it's well-suited for many Switch 2 games, hinting that Nintendo might be setting expectations or trying to mitigate potential user frustrations.

Even if the new GameCube controller is strictly for retro gaming, there's good news for those with existing accessories: the GameCube Controller adapter, popular from the Wii U era, will be compatible with the Switch 2 via the USB port on its dock, ensuring continued use for long-time fans.

With the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, the Nintendo Switch Online library is set for a major update, offering access to a nostalgic collection of early 2000s titles. At launch this summer, fans can dive into classics such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. The library promises to grow, with future additions teased to include Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more.

While the exact pre-order date for the Nintendo Switch 2 and the accompanying GameCube controller remains under wraps, potential buyers should keep an eye out.
