After the exciting reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 this morning, the buzz around using Joy-Con controllers as a mouse is gaining more traction. In the reveal trailer, we caught a glimpse of a pair of detached Joy-Cons being lowered onto a surface, attachment side down. They connected to a pair of connectors with flat bottoms and smoothly glided across the surface, much like a mouse on a mouse pad. Upon closer inspection, you can even spot what appears to be a slider pad on the bottom of one of the connectors, adding more weight to the mouse theory.
Rumors had been swirling ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, suggesting the possibility of using the Joy-Cons as a mouse, thanks to a sensor inside the controllers similar to that found in computer mice. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these rumors or clarify what this feature would entail. Enthusiasts speculate that this could enhance gameplay for titles like Civilization, which are traditionally more suited to mouse and keyboard controls. Others believe that, in true Nintendo fashion, this feature could introduce innovative gameplay elements in their first-party titles. The possibilities remain open-ended.
While we're still in the dark about the full extent of potential mouse support and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, there's plenty we do know about the Nintendo Switch 2. It's officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, set for release in 2025, and a new Mario Kart game is already in development for it. The console will be backward compatible with the original Switch, and more details about upcoming software will be shared at a Direct in April.
