Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: A Potential Mouse Mode?

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons may offer an unconventional feature: computer mouse functionality. While the likelihood of widespread developer adoption remains uncertain, this potential aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The intriguing clue comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has already fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC uncovered further details, revealing shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "for game console handles." The "mouse soles" designation, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, strongly suggests a potential mouse-like mode for the new Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, implying they represent unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, appears large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly. The legitimacy of this information, however, remains unconfirmed.

Not a First for Handhelds

While a mouse-like controller mode is consistent with Nintendo's experimental approach, it's not unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already incorporates this feature on its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to optimize its surface glide.

The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for controller attachment—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities suggest the Legion GO might offer a glimpse into the Switch 2's design and functionality.
