Obsidian's Avowed: 60fps on Xbox Series X Confirmed, Series S Locked at 30fps
Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment's highly anticipated RPG, will achieve a frame rate of up to 60 frames per second (fps) on the Xbox Series X, according to game director Carrie Patel in a MinnMax interview. While Patel didn't elaborate on specifics, the confirmation contrasts with the previously announced 30fps cap for the Xbox Series S version.
Whether Avowed will offer selectable performance and graphics modes remains unclear. A performance mode typically prioritizes 60fps with potentially reduced visual fidelity, while a graphics mode often favors higher visual quality at 30fps. It's possible the Series X will run at 60fps by default.
The game's release date presents a curious pricing structure. Early access, granting players access on February 13th, requires a $89.99 purchase. Those opting for the standard $69.99 edition will need to wait until February 18th, a strategy recently employed by some publishers but already abandoned by others, such as Ubisoft.
Set within the Pillars of Eternity universe, Avowed is a first-person fantasy RPG emphasizing player choice and agency. Players will unravel mysteries, navigate political intrigue, and forge alliances or rivalries as they journey through a world steeped in war and conflict.
IGN's final preview lauded Avowed's engaging dialogue, expansive player freedom, and overall enjoyable gameplay, stating, "Avowed is just a lot of fun."
