Master the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide
Few things are as satisfying in action games as perfectly deflecting an enemy's attack, turning their aggression into an opportunity for a devastating counter. If you're seeking this exhilarating experience in Avowed, this guide will teach you the art of parrying.
Unlocking the Parry Ability
Before you can parry, you must first unlock the ability. Navigate to the "Abilities" menu, then select the "Ranger" tab. The Parry ability is located in the top middle column. To unlock it, you'll need to allocate an Ability point to any of the three core skill trees. Once this is done, Parry will become available.
Parry has three ranks, detailed below:
Rank | Player Level Requirement | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | N/A (1 Point Spent) | Unlocks the Parry ability. |
2 | Player Level 5 | Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, enhancing stun. |
3 | Player Level 8 | Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, enhancing stun. |
At level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," allowing you to parry projectiles.
Executing a Parry
Parrying requires precise timing. You must block immediately before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue will confirm a successful parry, leaving your enemy momentarily stunned. Mastering the timing requires practice, but it's significantly less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Limitations of Parrying
It's crucial to understand that not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle must be dodged. Furthermore, only certain weapons can be used for parrying: single-handed and two-handed weapons (excluding those in your off-hand), and shields (when equipped in the off-hand). Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot be used to parry.
The Benefits of Parrying
Parrying is invaluable for stunning attackers, creating openings for significant damage. It's a defensive technique that simultaneously increases your offensive potential.
While highly effective for melee builds, parrying is less useful for ranged characters. However, Avowed's easy respec system allows you to remove the Parry ability later if needed.
