Since the launch of the PS5 Pro, a persistent shortage of standalone PS5 disc drives continues to plague gamers. Scalpers are exacerbating the issue, driving prices significantly higher than retail.

Both the US and UK PlayStation Direct online stores remain consistently out of stock, with any available drives quickly disappearing. This scarcity stems from the PS5 Pro's design: released in late 2024, this upgraded console omits a built-in disc drive, making the previously available accessory a necessity for those wanting to play physical games.

The surge in demand, fueled by the PS5 Pro's release, has overwhelmed supply. The situation mirrors the initial PS5 launch in 2020, with scalpers aggressively acquiring drives and reselling them at inflated prices. This adds considerable expense to an already premium console purchase.

The shortage shows no immediate signs of easing. As of this writing, PlayStation Direct remains devoid of stock, and while some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally receive limited shipments, these are quickly depleted.

The Ongoing Crisis and Sony's Silence

Scalpers have capitalized on the demand, prioritizing the acquisition of drives over the PS5 Pro consoles themselves. Sony's lack of comment on the situation is noteworthy, particularly considering the company's efforts to maintain PS5 production during the pandemic.

The PS5 Pro's omission of a disc drive has been a contentious point since its September unveiling. The additional cost of the standalone drive, approximately $80 from official sources, combined with scalping activities, leaves many players with little recourse but to wait for improved supply and reduced demand – a prospect that currently seems distant.
