When Can You Switch Between Naoe and Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Author: Owen Mar 21,2025

Assassin's Creed Shadows boasts two compelling protagonists: the skilled Shinobi Naoe and the formidable Samurai Yasuke. However, the ability to freely switch between them isn't immediately available. Let's clarify when and how you gain control over both.

The game's opening, a roughly 90-minute prologue, introduces a structured alternation between Naoe and Yasuke. Post-prologue, you'll initially play exclusively as Naoe for several hours. Don't worry, your Samurai adventure isn't delayed indefinitely! You'll remain locked as Naoe until nearing the end of Act I, with Yasuke's playable debut occurring during the "Temple of the Horseman" quest. He then takes center stage briefly in the "Fire and Lightning" quest. Completing these quests and Act I finally unlocks the freedom to seamlessly switch between Naoe and Yasuke.

How Long Until You Can Switch Protagonists in Assassin's Creed Shadows?

My playthrough took around 10 hours to reach the point where protagonist switching is fully unlocked, including substantial side content. A more focused approach, prioritizing the main storyline of Act I, should allow you to reach this point within 6 to 8 hours.

Once unlocked, switching is straightforward. Fast traveling offers a simple method. When selecting a fast travel point, you'll see two options: one to fast travel as your current character, and another to fast travel as the other. This works for various locations, including Synchronization points and Kakurega Hideouts. Additionally, certain story quests will present a choice of protagonist.

When Can't You Switch Protagonists?

While Act I concludes the restriction on free switching, specific story moments and major quests will still lock you into playing as one character or the other. Note that some quests and activities are character-specific. Naoe and Yasuke each have unique quests delving into their backstories *before* their meeting, featuring only one character. Certain side activities also require either Naoe or Yasuke, indicated by a Samurai helmet icon (Yasuke) or a Shinobi hood (Naoe).

Assassin's Creed Shadows is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
