The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know

The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved game. With GTA Online's continued success and profitability, the question of whether it will be replaced or continue alongside a potential GTA Online 2 is paramount. While he avoided specifics regarding any unannounced GTA Online sequel, he offered insight by referencing the company's handling of NBA 2K Online. NBA 2K Online, launched in 2012, was not discontinued after the release of NBA 2K Online 2 in 2017. Both versions coexisted, continuing to serve their respective player bases.

Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles. We've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them." This suggests that a potential GTA Online 2 might not necessarily replace the original. Continued player engagement with the existing GTA Online could mean continued support from Rockstar Games.

However, much about GTA 6 remains unknown. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more information soon, especially considering the proximity to the announced release of Borderlands 4 in September. Zelnick's comments offer a glimmer of hope for long-time GTA Online players, but the ultimate decision rests with Rockstar.
