Tencent Acquires Majority Stake in Kuro Games

Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, has reportedly secured a majority stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular mobile games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition gives Tencent a commanding 51.4% ownership, making it the sole external shareholder.

This significant investment builds on Tencent's initial investment in Kuro Games in 2023. While Tencent now holds controlling interest, a Kuro Games insider, speaking to Chinese news outlet Youxi Putao, assures that the studio will maintain its operational independence. This mirrors Tencent's approach with other successful studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games' official statement emphasizes that this move will foster a "more stable external environment" and support its long-term independent strategy. Tencent has not yet publicly commented on the acquisition.

Kuro Games has achieved notable success with both Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue. Wuthering Waves, an open-world adventure RPG, has even garnered a Players' Voice nomination for The Game Awards. The acquisition promises to further bolster Kuro Games’ growth and development capabilities.
